Directions and parking

Directions to The Count House & Smithy, Okel Tor Mine, Harewood, Calstock, Cornwall, PL18 9SQ

IMPORTANT: Some satnavs will struggle to take you all the way to Okel Tor Mine so please ensure you have these directions to hand. We recommend that you print them off.

By Car

From Callington: Follow the A390 through St Ann’s Chapel and turn right where signposted for Calstock.

From Tavistock: Take the A390 (signposted Gunnislake & Callington). After about 4 miles cross the bridge that takes you into Cornwall. Drive up the hill through the traffic lights in Gunnislake and continue on for about 1 mile. Immediately before the Asda petrol station and shop branch off left. At the end of this road turn left.

And then, from either direction… After about 3⁄4 mile the road sweeps to the right down to Calstock. Don’t go there but carry straight on to Calstock Church. At the Church the road bends sharply right down towards the village. Again, don’t turn right but carry straight on along a single-track road.

This road passes Harewood Cottage on the left and then descends through woodland for a little over 1⁄2 mile to a railway crossing. Turn left immediately after the crossing and follow the lane for 200 metres.

Where the lane widens, and before the “Harewood Farm” sign, there is a turning bay on your left-hand side. Keep over to the left so that you can take a wide sweep round to the right and down the unmade track to Okel Tor Mine. Beware of the kerb and change of level as you drive onto the track. There is a risk of grounding if you turn in too early. The track is unmade so, if you’re unsure about the suitability for your car, park up at the top and walk down to check. There aren’t many cars that will have a problem - if taken slowly.

NOTE: Should parked cars obstruct the turning area we recommend that you continue along the left fork ahead for about fifty metres - turn around and approach the entrance from the other direction.

Carry on down the track for a few hundred metres until you see a corrugated roofed shed on your left - merging on the left you’ll find the drive that leads to the cottages. (Should you reach a proper road again, you’ve gone too far.)

PARKING

For The Smithy, park here (over to the left so that other cars can pass. See map below). The Smithy is the second cottage (on left) as you go down the drive.

NOTE: You don't need to turn the car around as, when you drive out, you carry on down the track and through the village.

For The Count House, reverse down the drive and park just before the cottage – it’s the first building you come to. (See map below).

For either cottage you may, if you wish, REVERSE down to unload.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK OR TURN ON THE GRASS.

By Rail

We are happy to collect guests from Calstock railway station. Just contact us ahead of your stay with your train’s arrival time at Calstock. If you’d rather walk, it will take around 20-30 minutes. From Calstock Railway Station walk down the hill into the village and along Fore Street past the Boot Inn and out onto Harewood Road. After 200 metres, this road forks at a no-through road “T” sign. Take the right fork.

Continue along the lane - there's a high wall on your right, then the wetlands wildlife reserve. Follow the lane right to the end where there are three stone arches (lime kilns) on the left. Continue beyond them and follow the bridleway sign around to the left. Carry on up this bridleway - you have now entered Okel Tor Mine! After 200 metres you'll see a public footpath going off to your right (with interpretation board). Ignore this and keep going up the track until you reach the drive that branches off to the right, by the wooden shed with a corrugated roof. This takes you down to the cottages - first the Count House then the Smithy.

Cottage Keys

If we are at home, we leave the keys in the cottage front doors. If not, you’ll find your cottage key in the key safe adjacent to the front door. The code will be the last four digits of your mobile phone number (or home number if that’s the only one you entered on the booking form).

If we are not around to welcome you, let yourself in, make yourself comfortable and relax!

If you get lost…

If you’d like some help finding us, please feel free to call on 01822 833566 or 07765 056449. We’re always happy to help.
